Starting a blog for $23.95
I have tried this whole blog thing a few times before. I usually start off great, posting twice a day for about 4 days, then once every other day, then just a string of “I swear I haven’t forgotten about this thing” posts every month or so.
But of course, this time will be different.
This is the first time I’ve actually taken the plunge and thrown down some cash for an online presence. I naturally lean towards finding the free option for almost everything online, but this time I decided it was time to be legit and buy a domain name and get some hosting and actually invest more than just myself into it.
I’ve got $23.95 on the line right now. This shit is serious.
I registered layeredthoughts.com at www.1and1.com because I wanted to visit a different site than godaddy.com that also looked like it was designed in 2002. Seriously, the layouts of both of those websites are awful. I’ve never really had any problems with godaddy, but I’ve heard good things about 1and1.com so I figured why not.
The name layeredthoughts is the result of me randomly typing in different names into the domain name search field. That’s a fun game in and of itself; I sat for about an hour trying different names, finding one and then deciding against because I thought it might be a stupid name for people to say if they were telling someone about what they were reading. Like fringely.com. I thought that was great, then I whispered it out loud and was embarrassed to have even said it. So I bailed on that one. Feel free to go buy it if you want, it’s still sitting there. Fringely. Like someone who is borderline on something. Fringely.
Layered Thoughts is better, I agree.
But to add some actual meaning to the name, it does work in the sense that I have a lot of thoughts. A LOT. I’m constantly thinking about new things, how to make some random idea into a business, how something would work if I were to try and build it. So these thoughts pile up over time. I have a notebook going that I have actually been using almost consistently over the last 6 months or so with a lot of random ideas. I’ve been trying to write down everything I think of and brainstorm at that moment as the idea is still fresh, so that maybe, one day, way off in the future, I can come back and possibly make something of it.
Maybe.
The hosting is provided by www.asmallorange.com. I had read about them in a forum somewhere and checked them out and found out they had a hosting package for $25 a year. “Fuckin’ sweet” I thought.
Then I sign up and find out I can pay $15 now for 6 months of hosting. “Even fuckin’ sweeter” I thought. Now you might be thinking, “Darrin, $15 for 6 months means it will cost you $5 more for a full year of hosting.” Which you’re correct about. But I’m pretty broke right now, so 6 months will cut it for now. I get about 3GB of bandwidth a month, so I should be fine unless I get Dugg or put on Reddit or something. And if my account does get rocked like that, I’ll be stoked to call up ASO and upgrade my account.
So now I’m going to try my hand at keeping an up to date blog. My last attempt (I hid it, so unless you’re good with google cache you aren’t going to find it) was tough for me to stay dedicated to because I limited myself to only writing about my learning about different computer techniques and tools. While that will be one of the main focuses on this blog, it will not be the only one. I’ll run out of stuff to talk about in about two weeks and then I’ll be out $23.95 for no reason.
With all of my thoughts and ideas comes a lot of research (read: random-ass web browsing) into how I would make them work or if anyone has already done something similar. And because of that, I will be posting a lot of stuff on this blog with my commentary added that will be about all kinds of random ideas and concepts and techniques and business ideas and politics and religion and philosophy and web design and programming and VW’s and and and…
..and so basically I don’t have a theme for this blog.
I’m just going to post what I find throughout the day. I’m going to post tutorials on how to do random things that I have learned how to do. I’ll post my comments on current events and readings that I do and movies and TV shows that I watch. I’ll post a funny picture or video I see or take or write about a party we throw at my house or how the cops came to break up the party (we have a neighbor who calls the cops when one of us sneezes, we’re practically on a first name basis with them now). I’m just going to write.
Feel free to read what I write, comment on what I write, tell me I’m an idiot, tell me I’m great, tell me whatever you want.
Or just read and enjoy.

Thank you for letting me know i’m free to call you an idiot, that may come in handy one day. The name of your blog is good, much better than all the other ones you came up with (i’m just imagining)
